Dr. Mary Jean Villa-Real - Guno
Vice President – UST President Pax Romana Coordinating Council (1977 - 1978)
Dr. Mary Jean Villa-Real – Guno was President of the UST Pax Romana Coordinating Council from 1977-1978. She is an esteemed clinician, researcher, teacher, and mentor with extensive expertise in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Nutrition, Bioethics and Healthcare Management. With a plethora of published works in the field of pediatrics and bioethics, Dr. Guno has made significant contributions to the health and long term care industry.
Dr. Guno began her career in the medical field as a subject supervisor at the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in 1989. Over the years, she held various positions within the faculty, including department secretary, faculty secretary, faculty council member, and assistant medical director for training at UST Hospital. She also served as the Project Director of the Nutrition Rehabilitation Unit, where she dedicated her efforts to improving the plight of malnourished children, conducting researches, and establishing the Pediatric Nutrition Support Team. Dr. Guno discharged her clinical, academic, and administrative duties with remarkable efficiency, reflecting the Thomasian graduate attribute of being a servant leader.
As a dedicated clinician and mentor, Dr. Guno is a lifelong learner with a multiplier effect, expanding the knowledge in current diagnosis and management of common pediatric nutrition, gastrointestinal, liver diseases to physicians, students, postgraduate trainees in the country and the region.
Dr. Guno was also President of the Philippine Society for Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition from 2004 to 2006 and again from 2008 to 2010. During her tenure, she spearheaded the standardization of the fellowship curriculum for the three institutions – UST, PGH, and PCMC. Dr. Guno is a highly sought-after plenary speaker for the Philippine Pediatric Society and has been invited to various PMA Component Society conventions for lectures in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Nutrition, and Bioethics.
Apart from her medical practice, after completing an MBA in Health and an Assisted Living Facility Core Training from Florida State University, Dr. Guno co-established and manages Home Health Care, Inc. www.homehealthcare.com.ph that provides home health care services to older persons at home by licensed health care professionals and long term care in the comfort of the homes of older persons and in eight ISO-accredited senior residential facilities or nursing homes in Metro Manila. HHC has been recognized by the Institute on Aging, National Institutes of Health, University of the Philippines Manila, the Philippine Healthcare Initiative, DOH-UNICEF Wash Fit Program and TESDA as one of the long term care institutions striving for quality in healthcare.
Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Guno has been delivering numerous lay fora on COVID-19, COVID-vaccination, COVID-variants, and strengthening resilience to various companies. She advocates for employees to be fully vaccinated to save their lives and livelihoods. Dr. Guno is an effective communicator and collaborator, reflecting yet another Thomasian graduate attribute.
